Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert were transitional composers, chief into the Romantic period, with their spread of existing genres, forms, and functions of music. In the Romantic term, the emotional and pointed qualities of music came to take superiority over the orientation towards skilfulness and tradition. The unpunctually 19th century saw a complete expansion in the measure of the orchestra, and in the r of concerts as part of urban brotherhood. Later Romantic composers created complex and often much longer harmonious works, merging and expanding established forms that had then been used alone. For example, counterpoint, combined with harmonic structures to imagine more extended chords with increased use of dissonance and to bring into being dramatic traction and resolution.
