The Album Design Process : Part 2 - The Process

If you watched, “How to Touch up blue-pencil 1000 Photos in 21 minutes,” then you already be sure what “Keyframes” are.  For those of you who are perfectly joining us, “Keyframes” are what I call your “5 Peerless Favorites” in Adobe Lightroom, and are toughened to speed up the editing development substantially.  Part 2 of this 3-part picket will NOT instruct how to lay out an album, but will be more of a primoridal soup of unlimited rants and run-on sentences with my philosophies on album format.

Your handy to start sly using Photoshop CS2.  Although, if you pauperism to build a dwelling-place with a hammer preferably of a nail gun, then go healthy ahead.  I tolerant of to spend my days in Photoshop plotting, until I happened upon Foto Fusion.  FF in fact shaved my model time in half.   I could go on-and-on about Foto Fusion, but we’ll preserve that for a different post.  Other programs for album work include Adobe InDesign, Photojunction, and Yervant Send for Gallery (which is pattern based).

After a conventional wedding, I will have roughly 100-200 Keyframe (favorite) photos.  These are the construction blocks of the couples wedding album.  The cessation of the photographs from the wedding will out as “fillers.”  The realized design approach is completely freestyle, and is remarkably based on your own creativity and intimate tastes.  You have to genuinely visualize the spread before you strengthen it.  Each spread should have 1-2 Keyframes, and anywere from 3-7 fillers.

So how extended should this take you?  I typically put in 30-45 minutes on a spread (reduced from an hour per spread using Foto Fusion).  Most of you are more than conceivable shaking your heads; but why?  Because it shouldn’t take that sustained?  Why should it not take that large to build a spread for a couples wedding album that will be passed down from siring to generation and will more than tenable be around for over 100 years?  Why would you would after an album design that’s thrown together in an hour?  Mournfully, this is considered the benchmark nowadays.  Is it square to charge the duo $8,000 to dash their wedding, only to invest an hour of your duration designing a wedding album?  Curtail your time editing to take into account more album design things.  It’s the immutable presentation from you as a photographer and your customer’s rate nothing less than the best.
